The Ore Mountains have always been a border wall separating the Czech lands from Saxony by a massive mountain ridge. At least, if one looked at them from the Czech side. They inspired awe and respect. Not so from the German side, where the mountains gradually rise and one does not even notice the increasing altitude until one stands on the edge of this border wall. And this magical edge, the border of two worlds, is the space we will pass through on today's route.
We start at the parking lot in the center of Měděnec. The iconic Mědník Mountain, listed by UNESCO as a unique site, is completely bored through by three medieval mines. Even on the surface, you can find the remains of opencast mining, and you can see the adit of Our Lady of Help inside. From the chapel at the top of Mědník there is a magnificent view. From here you can see the entire length of the Ore Mountain ridge. From Mědník we will continue along a beautiful meadow and forest path to Horní Halž. From Halžský vrch you will have an unparalleled view of the Ohře valley, with everything you need for a stunning panorama.
From Mědník, we’ll continue along a beautiful meadow and forest path to Horní Halže. From Halžský vrch, we’ll be treated to a unique view of the Ohře Valley. We’ll then continue through a forest section along the newly marked Krušnohorská Hřebenovka trail. At the J. Khauer monument, we’ll head over the ridge and reach a beautiful forest and meadow enclave with rare plant species. A short detour will take us to the Vápenka technical monument, which features a self-service bar.
After a discreet turn-off, we head toward a unique place—the abandoned settlement of Königsmühle. Unlike many other such places, the abandoned buildings here remained standing after World War II, and for the past 14 years, the DoKrajin association has been caring for this beautiful site and organizing an annual Land Art festival here. The former settlement features a fire pit, a shelter, benches, a pond, and plenty of land art pieces to explore. In the ruins of the childhood home of local native Rosemarie Ernst, you’ll also find a Poesiomat that tells the story of the place and the fate of her family.
From Königsmühle, we climb to the lookout meadow and cross the forest path below the magical Meluzina peak. It is the wildest and probably the most photographed mountain in the Ore Mountains. This is probably due to the jagged rocks on the summit and the boulder fields on its southern slope. According to the legend of Waulee, the rocks here sing, and you can also find a statue of Melusina.
From Meluzina we will make our way along forest paths through peat bogs to the highest peak - Klínovec. Although it offers no mythical stories, the history of the exploitation of this Olympus of the Czech Northwest is also valuable. Passing around Boží vyhlídka (God's View) we will then reach Boží Dar. We are at the end of our journey and our souls are full of the mysteries of the Ore Mountains.
