The Ore Mountains break into two halves at Mount St. Sebastian in the Bezruč valley. The longest valley of these mountains drains the plateaus, from which lone basalt peaks rise to beautify the local landscape. Let's walk through them!
We start at the square in Mount St. Sebastian, where you can park without any problem. We head west towards a small lake called Marcebila's Eye near a trio of wind turbines. Bathing in this mountain eye is said to give robust health and even immortality.
We continue along the road to the Novoveský pond and from it along the forest path to the extinct village of Jilmová. Cross the bridge to the Saxon side, to Satzung. The latter is still a living village, exposed to the fierce winds of the plateau. But we don't mind that, and we follow a beautiful meadow path up to the unique Hirtstein peak. Here, in addition to the mountain hut, we find a unique basalt fan with a beautiful view. It is listed as one of Germany's geological wonders.
From here we will follow a forest path to Reitzenhain, where we will cross the state border again and enter the territory of the deepest peat bogs of the Ore Mountains through the extinct village of Pohraniční. We will not miss the beautiful meanders of the Černá River, which forms the border between the two countries. At the gas station we can refill water and food and continue towards Bezručov valley.
We will pass many ponds, which look absolutely beautiful in the mountain landscape. We will descend to the Chomutovka river at the bottom of the Bezruč valley. Here we will turn right back towards Mount St. Sebastian. We will pass a remnant of the railway in the form of a ruined viaduct, an impressive station alley, and find ourselves back in the parking lot.
