“It all comes from mining!” - This motto is deeply rooted in the mining town of Schneeberg. Enjoy nature, geology, history and world heritage all at once!
Unusually rich silver deposits led to the founding of the mining town of Schneeberg, which began in 1471. After the decline of silver mining in the 16th century, the abundant deposits of cobalt ore became globally important. From the 16th to the 19th century, the Schneeberg mining district was the largest and most important source of cobalt ore in the world. Cobalt blue, a highly valued color extracted from the ore, was used in ceramics, porcelain and glassmaking. The lovingly decorated baroque buildings bear witness to this era.
Many valuable artifacts from the historical mining period have been preserved in Schneeberg, especially in Neustädtel. The unique landscape, shaped by mining, was placed under conservation protection as early as 1978. Since 6 July 2019, the Schneeberg mining landscape has also been part of the "Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří" UNESCO World Heritage Site.
