This hike starts at the parking lot at the lower reservoir of the Markersbach pumped storage power plant. Information panels at the dam provide fascinating insights into the workings of Germany's second-largest pumped storage power plant, an impressive technological marvel set in the natural landscape of the Ore Mountains. Together with the upper reservoir, the lower reservoir plays a central role in the storage of energy from renewable sources, making it a key component of the renewable energy transition.

As you cross the dam, a striking viaduct on your left will catch your eye: Deutsche Bahn is currently testing autonomous train technology on this historic railway line – an exciting future project on a route that is only used for passenger transport for a few days a year.

After crossing the dam, the trail turns right into the forest and leads along well-maintained paths around the entire lower reservoir. The biodiverse forest is particularly impressive: observant hikers will enjoy spotting numerous species of trees. Clearings frequently open up, revealing views of the water and the surrounding landscape. On the way back, two well-designed rest areas provide welcome respite for visitors. Visitors will enjoy the mill with its many small water wheels, seating areas, and creative games, making this place attractive for young and old alike.

A few meters further on, there is another water wheel—this time larger—with a shelter and a Kneipp toilet, providing visitors with the opportunity for a comfort break. The last section back to the parking lot leads along an asphalt road.
