The mountain plateau around Přebuz in the western Ore Mountains is a natural reservoir of water, which has always fallen in abundance in the Ore Mountains. This is one of the reasons why numerous peat bogs have formed here, which are now protected under the Ramsar Convention on Landscape Protection. The plateau of this part of the mountains is ideal for hiking. And not only because of the famous torso of a former tin mine that sticks out of the bog as a memento of a bizarre mining plan during World War II.
We start at the parking lot on the edge of the extinct settlement of Rolava. Follow the marked path to the picturesque valley of the Lučina River at the edge of extensive peat bogs. In the past, there used to be a few houses and a customs office here as well. On a comfortable forest path we will cross to the German side and go slightly downhill to the Carlsfeld drinking water reservoir. At the mountain lake we can rest and renew our energy.
Continue on to the causeway, below which the Talsperre restaurant hides in a beautiful view. There we can refresh ourselves. We continue along a beautiful path at the edge of the woods and meadows to the Weiterglashütte. We pass a small mountain lake and continue through the Nordic style landscape along the deep Grosse Bockau mine.
We reach the state border again, where the famous Celnice bistro is located. There, you are sure to enjoy some of the local culinary delights. Along a forest path and a footpath, we will reach the remnant of the village of Jelení, which will undoubtedly captivate us with its beauty and alluring atmosphere.
We then climb up to the former Sauersack Mine, built by the Nazis during World War II. But they miscalculated and soon the deposit was exhausted. Today, the concrete torso of the ore processing plant stands like a phantom in the middle of swamps and woods, gradually being swallowed up by nature. It is not surprising, therefore, that a mature forest is growing on the roof of the mine and the whole scene is very photogenic. The local scenery has been the setting for many films.
Then we continue between the peat bogs back to Rolava, where you can visit the Post Office bistro or walk back to the parking lot via a shorter route through the meadows.
